I'm not surprised. I think this may happen to east coast states here in the US. Science community is keeping a close eye on eel populations now. The glass (elver) fishery is still going on here in Maine, but I think this is the only state that still has it. Latest price I heard was $1000 / pound. Eel populations in Europe and Asia have really declined, hence the good price for US eels as the demand is still there but supply is low. Most go to Asia for food.

In Canada about 75 percent of the population is shredded to sashimi when they run down the river to spawn and flow through dams, your supposed to not keep them or get a big fine. They are far less common in canada then they used to be about 5-10% of the original population, but like I said this is Ontario regulations.

collecting them from the wild in canada might seem like a bad idea, but being rare up there shouldn't stop you from getting one from where they're abundant.
