Ames Research Blue Max

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I emailed the company and they told me that it is not recommended for the plywood tank application. I figured that they just did not want the responsibility of it.

interesting...i've been looking for quite some time now, cant find any solid pictures of a finished build or even test of the product. Have read alot of talk about attempts but never an account. any links much appriciated.

im well aware of the sticky :) . I also found Necro's test pics of the BlueMax product :headbang2ALot of reading but well worth it. I wish we could all see that tank finished! Necro 100% confirmed its ability to stick to wood and acrylic and the Permadri users have already confirmed the way to seal it over the silicone to the acrylic. The debate is still its ability to be fish safe. I went to my local Handyman and tried to get some today but none in stock :(

Necro and I along with many others had this discussion a few years back. I originally built a tank using ames sno seal. The coverage was not quite as good as I hoped. The tank was a 2x2x4 100 gal plywood. It successfully held water but over time it degraded and bubbled. It eventually qwould have failed completely had I left the tank running but it last for about a year. I would not put any sort of pleco in a tank using this stuff.... At any rate, there are many other products that have proven to work that are just as inexpensive as Blue Max when you finally break the pricing down.

I even started a thread because of that discussion and built another 100 gallon tank using another product in the same price range because ames wasn't readilly available and after shipping it was more expensive than local products. I honestly don't know of a tank other than mine to be finished and working with any ames product. Other products to look at would be fiberglass, insul-x, etc..

However, if you choose to use blue max please document it for the rest of us.

I recently completed a 425 gal. build using Ames Blue Max on Birch plywood. I wouldn't use it again. No offence to Ames, the product does everything they say it will do but my issue with it is that when it gets wet it turns a blotchy white and turquoise. In the end I lined the tank with black ABS panels to cover the horrible colour. The stuff's great for sumps or any other "non-appearance" application but I wouldn't use it in an aquarium again. My next build will use labratory grade plastic laminate i.e. WilsonArt's Chemsurf. I hope this helps.
