ammonia burn - thank you for the help everybody!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sorry you lost the ray. I may have missed it, but what was the ammonia reading then and what is it now?

Not sure why your fx5 looked like that, but I clean mine every 3 months and it doesn't even come close to looking like yours. Cleaning every four months is too long for a bio loads like stingrays! You should have more filtration in your tank. Also try feeding less food so it doesn't get sucked up in the filter.

Canister filters causing problems again? No! I don't believe it?!? They never lead to problems.....

Canister are a joke in my opinion. Even moreso in regards to rays.

I have 1 canister filter in use at my house and it's only purpose is moving water from the tank below to the tank above it, this way my 75 gallon pup tank's water volume is almost doubled.

I'm sorry for your loss. Hopefully this turns into a stepping stone in the evolution of your raykeeping habits

I personally think designing a systems filtration is the funnest part aside from feeding time.

^ I can't agree more. When you keep fish that produce the amount of waste that rays do, sumps are the way to go....and once again, until things are under control check your water levels daily. ....sorry for your loss.

I think your female is just stronger, maybe larger, maybe not.

I think it is not the gunk that directly lead to ammonia but it probably blocked up the filter bacteria area plus the flow rate dropped due to the clogging and this lead to less O2 for the bacteria. Bacteria always die off and leave brown gunk, you need to flush it out regularly with old tank water.

I think canisters should always be run with another so you can alternate cleaning. A sump and a canister for back up is way better.

As the rays grow they produce more and more waste so your filters need to grow too. You may consider a faster flowing media for the larger filter. If you have room above the tank then the fx5 could return up past the tank and back down through a pond filter above, not nice looking but might do the job.

If you ever see a large spike like that then do a 40% or more and do another the next day.

The new filter would not have caused this.

thank you for all the kind words and advice everybody I appreciate it. I feel like I lost a child and I'm sad to say when I lose fish (especially a ray) I just think of the money I have lost being that I'm a broke college student and most of my money goes into this hobby.

anyway, time for a sump I should have done this a long time ago. I do not have any cutout or overflows on my tank but I'm sure there is a way to build a sump without all of that...anybody have a good DIY thread they can point me to?

building cars is my other expensive hobby so I'm sure once I build a sump I'll smack myself for not doing it earlier I'll enjoy the build part lol

You will need to buy a hob overflow box, a return pump, a return and you can either buy a premade sump or diy one...

thanks I've been looking on CL and I found a wet/dry for about $100 with a hang on back overflow just hoping I can fit it since my tank is kind of close to my wall.
