My 55gal tank has been set up for 5 weeks now and my ammonia spiked, followed by the nitrites and nitrates and my ammonia went back down to 0 and all other levels 0. Now, my ammonia is creeping up to .25 again. Is this something I should worry about or what do you think is happening? I have 4 adult guppies in there right now but I was hoping this week to put in 4 1.5 inch piranha's. Is the tank ready for this change over?

any ammonia is bad.
what you first described sounded like a tank cycle, but I would think you should be showing some nitrates.

any ammonia in the tank is bad for fish and espically small ones

Have you made other changes to the tank, such as large water changes, addition of medications, increased feeding, etc.?

I just did a 10% water change. I have about 8 small baby guppies in there in addition to the 4 adults and I've read that I should feed 3x a day. Is that too much? I've only done 2 10% water changes total in 35 days. I didn't want to remove the beneficial bateria. Should i increase the amount of the water changes to 20%?

If there is uneaten food in the tank you can get an ammonia spike. It's hard to say whether you're feeding to much without watching. I would just keep an eye on the ammonia and make sure the tank isn't re-cycling before adding new fish.

How do I know if its a recycle? Should I be trying more water changes? How much food should I be giving the guppies? I do see some food make it to the bottom of the tank but the fish pretty much consume the flakes in approx. 5 minutes.

I wouldn't be feeding 3x a day. I personally feel that is too much. chances are you are the uneaten food is causing your ammonia to spike. What are your nitrite/nitrate readings?

Nitrites and Nitrates are both reading zero as of this morning. My ammonia was 0 5 days ago and then I did my first water change of 10% since I have set the tank up. Totally not sure what is going on.

I just originally put in like 15 goldfish for cycling purposes. 7 died in the first 2-3 weeks. I moved the remainder 8 to my 20 gallon feeder tank and then moved 4 guppies into the 55 gal. they had babies in the 55 gal. No added chemicals to help with the cycling.
