I just originally put in like 15 goldfish for cycling purposes. 7 died in the first 2-3 weeks. I moved the remainder 8 to my 20 gallon feeder tank and then moved 4 guppies into the 55 gal. they had babies in the 55 gal. No added chemicals to help with the cycling.

i would say your bb starved because of the large drop in bio load and the tank is recycling.

If there are fish in the tank and there was ammonia in the tank, there must be nitrate in the tank. Otherwise, there is a flaw in your testing method.

Water change doesn't remove nitrifying bacteria. Change 50% of water daily when ammonia or nitrite is detectable.

I'm confused. Just from going from 8 to 4 fish the bb is starved and I'm cycling again. If I am going thru a new cycle, then how much longer do you think it will take for the tank to stablize again? Or would daily water changes stabilize the tank?

well you went from 8 large fish to four small ones so there will be a large drop in bioload. it may take between 1 to 4 weeks to become stable. that is why i prefer to just add established media and put the fish in.

even with only a trace of .25 ammonia, you think this is a recycling tank? All levels are correct except for the ammonia. Could this be like someone said earlier a case of maybe over feeding. I was feeding them quite frequently for the last 10 days or so. How do i monitor the situation from here?

try to reduce your feeding and if ammonia increases any more do a small water change, give it a few days and you should find the ammonia drop, i had the same thing which turned out to be a mini cycle.

Your tank is not re-cycling. Your tank never finished cycling. If most of the fish died within the first 2-3 weeks, they were not in there long enough to build up a bio load in the first place. Four guppies in a 55 gallon would take on the order of about a year to cycle a tank, even with fry. (OK, maybe I am exaggerating, but it would take a really, really long time).

Your tank is cycling. And all the other numbers are NOT correct. An aquarium with a functioning biofilter has nitrate in it. You stated that nitrate is zero.
