Ammonia in tap water, how to neutralize?

Don't change the filter cartridge? I only change the filter pad (mines blue) not the mesh it goes through before re entering the tank.

Yea don't replace the blue pads. Yep them till they are fall apart

I have two that I've had on my very first tank. They started out blue now they are more brown. I would just open em up drop the carbon (mine are crushed bio max) in a bucket or bag and rinse them in tank water. Fill it back up with carbon and put it back.

Wow, I never had an issue before but I'm not going to change the filter from now on! Can't believe I spent this much on filters over the years for no reason, kind of embarassing lol thanks a million for the help guys. Anything I can do to help the bacteria grow?

Throw some food in there let it rot away for a few days.

Lol it's funny that you mentioned that cause I was thinking how much more I would be spending if I did.

Just put the food directly on the filter then? Yea those filters aren't super expensive but they add up in a hurry! I spent about $12 a month, adds up over a year!

You put the food in the tank just make sure you put a good amount considering its a 10 gallon shouldn't be more then a couple pinches.

Are there any fish left in the tank?

If you have three comets that are still alive, they are producing enough ammonia to get your filter cycled.

Feed them lightly and in time your filter will be cycled. Don't add excess food...that's only going to spike your ammonia even further. Adding food to rot in an empty tank is one way to cycle a tank, but if you already have fish, it's unnecessary.

Is this a growout tank? Pond Comets can get up to 16" when properly cared for...definitely not a fish (much less 3 of them) for a 10G.

What are you using to remove chloramines from your tap water when you do water changes? If you aren't using any conditioner, this could be the reason you are getting ammonia readings from your test kit. Water treated with chloramines will often test positive for ammonia. That Aqueon Ammonia Neutralizer stuff doesn't say anything about removing chloramines. What you need is their water conditioner (http://www.aqueonproducts.com/products/tap-water-conditioner74704.htm). Most people on here use Seachem Prime to treat their water for water changes, but the Aqueon Water Conditioner should work well too.

All my fish are dead now, I woke up this morning to find the floating and my ammonia is higher then it has ever been. I am honestly at a loss here I had reduced feeding to every other day and fed lightly. This is my growout tank for the pond. Where do I go from here now? I need to get this tank going again and I noticed the ammonia levels in my cichlid tank starting to rise I need help asap as I do not want to lose my cichlids as well!

Are you on well or city supplied water? never heard of 2ppm ammonia thats crazy.. but the seasons changing maybe your water co has altered the chemical makeup of their disinfecting practice.

For now buy 5 gallon jugs of store bought water. Then you know for certain its good!
