ammonia levels and ammonia neutralizer

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ok. so just so I am clear:

1) remove carbon but in another biowheel filter
2) daily water changes, 20 gal, a day until ammonia goes away
3) reduce feedings to 2 flake/pellet feedings a day, 1 beefheart feeding

should I add tank starter to the water?
if you really want to keep the fish you've got I'd do 2 20G changes daily.
no, not 3 feedings a day, until your ammonia is down feed flake every other day. no beefheart.

I have a question about ammonia aswell. I tested my water the other day and had around 0.25ppm in the tank water. My ph is around 8, nitrites 0 and nitrates 20ppm.

I was curious to why I was reading any ammonia at all so I went ahead and tested my tap water and it came out between 0.50 - 1.0ppm. I guess my bio is doing some good work?
Is there anything I can do about this? I use prime and dose each bucket before I add it to the tank.

Also the tank smells, assuming because of the ammonia, but is perfectly clear. 60 gallon, 2 AC110's and 2 small Dovii growouts. Water changes every other day. It's been setup for 2 years. Any solution you guys know of or am I stuck with it? I'd like to bring my ph down a tad too, does manzanita do this? I recently took my pieces out and cut them up for a smaller tank.

Thanks guys

would you mind posting what your tankmates are? and this will determine your feeding schedule. I have cichlids, I feed 1 time per day and skip a day once every week or 2. over feeding is bad for fish health and for water ammonia... also, 9depending on tankmates) get some corydora's (about 6) they will eat leftover food from bottom... :)
