To expand this somewhat... most LFS with less knowledgable peeps will sell you just the ammonia kit. Big mistake! After the ammonia spike comes the nitrite spike. This kills more fish than the ammonia I think... and not just immediately. Damage can be done to the fishes gills and they can die much later. Most people that have tanks sitting in the garage never made it out of this phase.
