Ammonia overdose .. crap

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Finally got the ammonia down to ~4ppm... Hope I didnt kill off all my BB in the process of overdosing. :irked:

Drained 85% of tank today and re-filled - treated with prime. Also dosed with Seachem.

Will wait 24hrs to see if ammonia levels drop,

One of the best investments I made was a dosing syringe.
Goes up to 10ml. on the graduated cylinder.
Takes all the guess work out of the deal.
Seems you got your tank under control.
Good luck on your cycle.

I've followed this to a T with success in the past, from algone.com:

Using Pure Ammonia to Cycle the Aquarium

Instead of using fish food for ammonia production, we can also introduce pure ammonia to the tank.

After the tank has been set up (see above), add 5 drops of ammonia per 10 Gallons into the water on a daily basis.

Ammonia will rise to 5 ppm and higher. As soon as nitrites are measurable, reduce the ammonia input to 3 drops per day. Nitrites will rise to similar levels. Keep adding 2-3 drops until the measurements of ammonia and nitrites come out with 0 ppm. The tank has then completely cycled.

Seeding the tank can significantly enhance this process. 7 days for a complete cycle are not unheard of; otherwise this methods takes 2-3 weeks.

The bacteria colonies, using this method, are certainly large enough to handle a well-stocked aquarium.

This is why i didn't use ammonia directly... cycled tank in other ways..

I've actually heard using ammonia drops helps for a quicker cycle, allows you to control how much ammonia instead of the guesswork of adding a prawn or fish food.

Thanks for info everyone.. been a great help :)

After this experience - im going to start using a syringe from now on. Will make dosing much more accurate and straight forward lol.

UPDATES!

Fixed the ammonia level previously, got it down to 4ppm.... ~three days later my NITRITE have shot up..showing off the chart ~8ppm i know this is a good sign. & ammonia levels have dropped ~ 1ppm now.

did a ~20PWC tonight to help drop ammonia / nitrite levels - didnt help. still showing same
Also dosing with stability as mentioned, going to keep dosing - i have a feeling at this rate, be another three days?

temp is @ 83*F

also had small amount of nitrate last night - ~5ppm. So I know im close. Not sure if WC would help

For some odd reason - doesnt seem like I had this issue when cycling my 40 gallon planted tank - fishless. I let it run for ~2 months on its own.
