Ammonia Spike

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You should not be having ammonia in the tap water.
Mine has 0.0 ammonia in the tap water...

Straight from the tap it's 1.0

Not good at all but a cycled tank should handle it no problem. Invest in a good dechlorinator that neutralises ammonia.

Still, it doesn't explain 5ppm and I'd still do large water changes with a proper dechlorinator, if you already don't have one...

Straight from the tap it's 1.0. I didn't change the reg filters. I changed the 2 small ones that go in front out the waterfall.

I live on the river and our water comes from the river, so it has a lot of chemicals. That's why I draw water from the hot water side and let it cool down. This is the first time that I've had a spike.

I put Prime in the buckets before I add it. What else should I use? I changed the water in the 55g Tuesday and the water was fine.

Prime is all you should be adding. Some people do have ammonia in their tap water, which is difficult to deal with. I would recommend looking into an RO filter.
In the mean time, if it's 5.0 in the tank and 1.0 in the tap, there is another problem. 4.0 ammonia in one week is a huge jump. How heavily is this tank stocked?
