Ammonia

My filtration is fine. I've got a 20 g sump stuffed with bioballs, floss, and carbon. I also have a marineland filter in the sump. The food is not a by-product. That doesn't make sense. A by-product is a secondary product of something. Nothing in my tank is producing the food. The high ammonia level is from the pellets getting into the sump and breaking down. Turning off the return pump will stop the pellets from going into the sump. That way I can scoop what isn't eaten out. My tank is not overstocked. I work at 2 fish stores and know what I am doing. I know all about all the levels and everything. I simply asked if anyone had tricks (obviously other than to stop feeding and do water changes) that would clear my cloudy water faster.

How long have the pellets been getting into the sump? You might want to rinse (clean) your bioballs then. If they are dirty, full of pellets, that's a nitrate factory right there. Maybe do a good sump cleaning all together, and then a good water change and I think you will be good to go.
:D

I just cleaned out the whole sump 2 weeks ago when I switched the tank from saltwater to freshwater

Wow a lot of hidden info in that last statement....your tank could most certainly still be cycling :D

Yeah, except for I know what im doing. I use an instant cycle that I use for all my tanks. It always gets the job done well. Any other expert advise?

wether food is excreated by your fish or stuck in your sump.. it produces the same amount of ammonia... But you apparently know what your doing and don't need help. I've only been working in the industry the past 13 yrs and been keeping fish for about 20?.. Your haveing cycling issues.. duh.. Your welcome. and anyone who claims to know it all and is a self proclaimed expert should be avoided fyi...

Im not having cycling issues. Duh. And I never said I know everything. I just know what the problem is. Im only 18 but im sure i've set up, established, and ran more tanks and owned more fish than you. And im being a dick because he tried to make me look stupid on something I didn't even ask his advise on. This isn't just my hobby. Its my job. And 20 years isn't ****. Im around guys who have been doing it for 35+ years on a daily basis.

If you get ammonia readings from excess food you are having cycling issues sorry. A mature bb bed can handle that unless you are dumping obscene amounts of food in your tank
