ammonia

I would definitely say that has to be a false positive. There's no way you could have this long of a spike in ammo (what, a couple of weeks now?) without also having some movement of nitrIte levels.

The fact that your tap water registers .25 of ammo - and only after you treat it - confirms this.

So, your thread question should be "does anyone else have chlorAMine treated tap water? Do you guys get false positive ammonia readings after dechlorAMinating with Prime/Stress Coat?"

It is worth mentioning, and I'm sure you know this already, that now you may indeed see real spikes in ammo/nitrite/nitrate, in that order, until your bio filtration has time to catch up to your new increased bio load (adding the ray). So don't slack off on water testing/changing now. I would treat anything above .25 ammo as >0, and do WC accordingly.

You are a ****ing legend!

thanks, big time

But if you treat your water with Prime and you're still showing ammonia in the tank itself, it wouldn't be cycled enough, correct?

Prime doesn't make ammonia disappear. It just makes it non toxic to the fish

I know, but bacteria DOES. I want to know his tank reading between water changes. If he has ammonia reading AFTER bacteria has had a chance to get to it, it would say that his tank isn't done cycling...IF that's the case. Won't know unless he gives the info. The ray could have very well upped the bio load enough to have a spike. I'd assume he would get a nitrite spike not too long after...But let's just hope he's only getting a reading with the tap or directly after the water change because Prime will have already detoxified it. :)

Slow down guys. Read everything. His tap water reads zero ammo. He then adds prime to tap water and it reads .25 ammo. This has been constant for a while. Now read my comment again.

I hadn't read the other thread, but I got you. Regardless, I want to know the readings of the tank to see if there's still ammonia present. Just trying to watch out for the guy.

^I got it. But based on all of his posts, his aquarium water actually has 0 ammo. His week long nitrIte reading of zero proves this. This, coupled with the time frame and the reading of relatively low nitrAte, means that his tank is fully cycled. As I said, the dynamics may change with the addition of the ray, but a 6" ray isn't going to throw things too out-of-wack considering the big BGK and oscars that were already present (bio load).

Which is why he needs to ask the chlorAMine question. I've never ever had a false positive, but my tap is treated with chlorine. I'm wondering if the false positive he has is coming from chlorAMines.
