Looking for some advice. Set up a new 125 about a month ago and have been waiting to find some Labiatus or Citrinellus. Been checking Rapps stock list every day but nothing yet. I noticed he has Amphilophus Sagittae and was wondering what is the difference between them and Red Devils or Midas?

Amphilophus sagittae is part of the citrinellus complex from Lake Xiloá, it's slightly more stream lined then a standard citrinellus similar to a zaliosus from Lake Apoyo.

The Sagittae he has now are also all of the Xanthic color morph. Really interesting coloration from them, absolutely gorgeous fish. I have one now I wish I had a pic, I'll try to get one later. He at first appears to be all white but he's got orange/yellow/red in his fins as well as this really nice blue sheen across his whole body. Email Jeff and ask him for some pics or just google the color morph.

Thanks! What are the differences personality and body shape wise between them and the Labiatus or Midas?

They seem to be somewhere in the middle between those two, a little more elongated than Citrinellus but not as much as Labiatus. As with all cichlids there can be great variation in individuals personality, but it's still an aggressive central american cichlid and should be treated as such. All that being said though I can say that mine is much milder than my labiatus or even some of my vieja. He doesn't mess with anybody and nobody messes with him either, except my maculicauda whom I'm convinced has the hots for him.

I just realized that the only reason I know about the Xanthic color morph is from Jeff Rapps himself creating a thread to show his adoration for this beautiful species. lol I'm an idiot. Looks, personality and care treat the same as a citrinellus
Thanks guys. I am a little torn because I have an empty 125 ready to go and really have been hoping for a Labiatus or Citrinellum (non barred). But starting to feel like I could be waiting a long time and have already had the tank empty for a month. So a few questions, how often do you notice that Rapps gets in Labiatus or Citrinellum (I have decided I am definitely ordering from him on this one), and also just some advice for the situation. Sorry if that is a broad question, just would love an opinion from some experienced fish keepers

Have you checked out the gold barred Citrinellus he has? They're awesome looking fish. I ordered my Labiatus from Jeff in April, and he hasn't had them readily available since then. I think one week he had some adults for sale.

If you have a 125 ready for fish I would order six juveniles and grow them out until a pair forms and have the 125 be just for them. With some nice heavy filtration I think a 125, bigger is always better, could be a nice home for a pair and just leave it at that. That way you can provide the proper care that they deserve.

Cota, have lake arenal pie bald midas in, and pie bald Labiatus, according to the stock list I got sent.

Yes the 125 is for a pair of Amphilophus (whichever I end up getting) and the plan is to end up with a pair in there and that's it. I have been considering the barred Midas but really like the darker orange color. Just feel like I may be waiting forever if I don't decide on something else
