I am using prime. I will test tap in the am. What should I do if the yap water has ammonia in it?

Joey Paul

From my knowledge the ammonia will still show on the test when using prime but it is detoxified. My tap water has ammonia and I've been using it along with prime for years

You should be using prime with every single water change.

You can still have clear water without carbon; I don't use it at all, nor do I use the ammonia remover; your tank is not going to cycle properly with either of those in your filter. All you need is biomax, filter floss & some sponge in it.

What you have in your filter now is working against you as your tank is new and you are trying to cycle it with fish in; it would have been easier to do a fishless cycle.

Is it good then to remove the carbon by cutting the inserts and taking carbon out? Or should I completely remove the insert from the penguin 350?

Thats what I do on my Emperor cartridges. Cut the plastic, dump the carbon and put it back in. I rinse the pads out and reuse them over and over.

If Prime is getting expensive, look into Safe. powdered version of Prime that goes much farther.
