Amonia Problem

Hey everyone.. ive been having an amonia problem and dont know what to do.. i just got a new filter and its a canister filter a Fluval.. i installed it yesterday after removing about 30% of water and replacing it with fresh water.. any suggestions? anything I should add to my water or something? please help amonia is really bad. its the darkest green when testing with my kit.. thanx :confused:
 
I've had my tank for little over a year now.. i've had this happen before ( in the first month or so of keeping my tank) and a couple of my fish died.. i really dont want any of my fish dying.. i think this could be the result of using an old/broken filter for a while (tetra 40 whisper) and now since yesterday I got a brand new Fluval 40 gallon filter.. i have a 35 gal Hex.. how can I know if this filter is doing a good job, it should be since i believe I installed it right. Im worried what to do? should i change 25-30% of the water again today.. is it possible my ammonia is coming from under my gravel. i tried to clean that out with a gravel pump attached to my air pump but it only made my tank more cloudy and I dont think it worked..
 
no my previous filter wasn't a canister filter so no. should I be taking 25-30% of the water out and replacing it with tap water? also should I try to move the tank to a sunnier spot in the room because I never get any algae growth and I heard that a healthy tank should have algae. would that make a difference with my amonia problem?
 
no dont move it in front of a window. Your going through a cycle. Whether mini or not I do not know you need to give us more info. Do you gravel vacuum ?
 
I would do a 80 percent water change , disturb substrate while changing, and clean any ornaments in the tank with aquarium or table salt. Rinse well. Let it cycle a few hours, 2-3 preferably. That should do it. Holla back if tha doesn't work.
