amphibian plants

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
In my old lizard and turtle tanks i used peace lilies they do not need to be planted in dirt or fertilized to be healthy. (they are the same plants people used to use in those betta bowls with the roots in the water and the plant coming out the top) You can get the at lowes, home depot...for cheap and all you do is take the plant out of the pot, rinse out the dirt from the roots, and either put it on the side of your tank with water and hold it up with rocks or get a cup big enough for the roots to be in and fill it with water and gravel or substrait to hold it up.

plantt choices include
-snake plants
-some orchids
-some bromiliads
-some ferns
=boston
=kimberly queen
=maden hair
-spider plants
-phiodendrium
-pothos
-english ivy
-baby tears
-creeping ficus
-java ferns
-diffenbachia
-calathia
-white ribbon dracina
-lots of moss species
-peace lilly's
-wandering jewe
-bridals vail
-nerve plant
-norfolk pine
-cladium
DO NOT USE CARNIVOROUS PLANTS (PITCHER, VENUS FLY TRAPS, BUTTER WORT, ECT) as far as fertilizing goes DONT. your frogs waste will provide the nutrients. if you realy wanted to fertilize use Seachem Florish (a tiny bit)

the problem I see is they say to change the substrate like once a week or so with frogs, how do you do that with the plants.

Once a week's a bit extreme...

-Plant the bottom with small gravel for drainage
-then a mesh (to prevent the substrate mixing and exposing the gravel to the frog which could cause impaction)
-then a thick layer of cocopeat with your plants in
-scatter some sphagnum moss on top which you can remove and rinse in dechlorinated water once a week or so for maintenance.

Used to work for me, and as a tip, go to a garden store and buy sphagnum moss there (for lining hanging baskets), it's about 1/10th of the price

i went two yrs in my whites tank before changing the substrate.... and this last time it had been a yr and i didnt change the substrate just added top soil. i have pill bugs and millipedes to help keep down waste.

i never change my substrate with the plants. add a layer of gravel then a thin sheet of filter floss ontop the gravel. then add a 1/2'' of hortocultural charcoal and 4'' of peat moss. buy some spring tails and get them breeding in your tank, they will consume waste and dead plant matter.

well I read that tomato frogs can sometimes sit for prolonged periods in their urine.Like if they pee in their resting spot and then keep going to rest in the same spot.Well thanks for all the info, when I get time I will study it all and go from there.

Carnivorous plants are okay... depending on HOW SMALL they are. But the smallest ones are also the hardest to take care of.

Anyway, what frog is that 20 gallon for arowana man?

I still wouldn't do it for any frogs that is known to burrow ie. Tomato Frog, Pac-man, Chubby et cetera.
