amphibious Robertsoni cichlid info?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'd like to add she is about 7-8 years old, and is 10'' TL measured out of water. From what I read they don't get this big. It is nearly impossible to tell males from females and venting is the only way. She isn't aggressive at all, and can't be kept with aggressive cichlids. I have had luck keeping her with a. rostratus (now) and a firemouth (past). You need to have a large tank for that to work. I recently had to get rid of a male JD in my 150g, because he was beating up my robertsoni.
I wouldn't keep one in a 55g w/ a pbass. The water requirements are different, but the biggest problem will be that the pbass will grow much faster. Robertsonis are very slow growers, will end up as food before you know it (also the others might too). A robertsoni would be good in a 55g for life and IMO totally worth it.

Very beautiful female cichlid. Ohh man, can't wait until mine starts coloring out. You can tell the blue is starting to pop on him. I'm actually going to move the pbass today. The pbass is starting to chase my bandit Cichlids and Robert around. I'm moving him to my 240. Would hate for him to end up as food. Does yours sift through the sand like a Geo?

Thanks. Your robertsoni is already showing a lot of blue at a very young age. That is a good move with the pbass. The others might be ok, but not sure what the long term will be like. I don't know much about the bandits. Robertsonis do sift through the sand like earth eaters, and I highly recommend it. Robertsonis are pretty hardy otherwise. They like a meaty diet too, but mostly pellets, invertebrate like bloodworms and shrimp. Mine loves the Hikari sinking carnivore pellets.

Thanks for the info cichlid. I'm definitely going to move him to my earth eater tank with my geos.

Good luck, I hope it works out. I don't know if the robertsoni will be too aggressive with the geos, or if the water parameters will be ok. Robertsonis are really hardy though.

He seems to be doing very well in my 55 with the same water parameters as my 100. I think you are right about him being aggressive towards the geos. He's like that towards my bandits which are just like a Geo but don't get as big. I'll keep you posted when he gets a little bigger and what the outcome is when I transfer him. Thanks a bunch.
