amphilophus and dovii

your dovii looks costa rican to me. they dont get as much blue as nics but still look nice. CR male's are more of a dark gold/yellow color. not as high bodied as nics either but usualy wider. he looks good. nice little hump on his head too. good luck

Actually I do believe CR's have a red/gold sheen across their bodies and are taller bodied and less elongated. Nics are primarily a river oriented fish, and so has a more narrow elongated body as to make swimming in the strong current easier. CR's I are a lake dwelling fish which means they dont need the underwater "aerodynamics" that a river/stream dwelling fish would.

I agree with themancmt, it does look Costa Rican. Add some substrate and better lighting so you will not need to use the flash, you will see the blue in his fins come out more.

If you notice in my thread when I use the flash his fins appear green as opposed to blue. For whatever reason the flash always drowns out the blue.

I used to think that too until I saw the big one in this pic from 'Rio Higueron, Costa Rica' and purchased a few F1-'s of my own that, at 3 inches, have more blue than my Nic did.

I'm sure there are exceptions but for the most part Nics have more blue. They are nicknamed Nicaraguan Blue after all :D

I guess it would be subjective. I think there are way less Costa Ricans in the hobby, so its hard to judge it by the few people that have them on here...as Ive yet to see a Costa Rican over 6 or so inches on MFK. Mine arent full grown by any means, but side by side, the Costa Ricans have more color at the same size. I have both in a tank now and am speaking from my experience of owning both.:naughty:

The third pic looks photoshopped or something.

i have a wild pair of costa rican dovii my male is at 5.5" now and he does have alot of iridesent blue shine on his fins but his fins are yellow/gold. my male has more of a greenish color on his face then blue like the nics. i know mine are CR's cause they were imported strait from costa rica and i have paperwork to back that up.
