Amphilophus Festae

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
These are real hard to come by, I was sold some in an honest mistake that were really Mayans. I did recently come across one very cheap. Drawback is, it's a fry and it's so small it's hard to take a good picture of. I can see the spot on the caudal fin and the faint y shape on the head. But also, having had small Mayans... the difference is very obvious. Always make sure you ask for Festae and not Red Terrors.

They were Amphilophus until a year or two ago. They are now back into the general "cichliasoma class".

So how is anything official at all when stupid stuff like this exist? Who the hell giving these guys name anyways?

Some kind of Scientist who gets high?

I just got a 1/2" one about 3 weeks ago from Segrest Farms for about $2.50

If you have a reliable LFS, ask them to order some from Segrest (they're a wholesaler so you need a retail license to buy). They aren't always available, but I have seen them on the stocklist 3 times since October. The list is put out on Mondays, so make sure your LFS is watching closely. Mine has already grown an inch, and I was out of town for 2 weeks!

I have also had Mayans, and this looks different to me. Much more pearling on the tail.

Mayans tail spot extends the whole width of the tail....festae's spots should only cover half. Also the first two vertical stripes on a festae join to make a 'y'..mayans should have two distinct lines...

I dont think yours is a Mayan. It looks like a cross between Mayan and something else. Ive had several and none every had spangling, black on the tail next to the spot or the colors on its back like yours does.

They looked like this:
