i have the chance to get about a 4-5" amphilophus lyonsi for $40. is that a good price or kinda pricey? also, would they be fine with my gar? i have read that they have the temperament of a JD, which i currently with my gar with no problems. also, i could get a pure wild caught trimac, 4" for $30. any ideas or opinions?

Imo that's not a bad price for a Lyonsi. It would probably do great with your current fish too. As much as I love Trimac, it would probably get too aggressive for your other fish.

i would love the trimac but i thought they would grow too aggressive as well, and the lyonsi is still a beautiful fish.

I have never kept gar before, but from what I understand is that they aren't aggressive like cichlids, but they are preditors. A. lyonsi is the most peaceful of the amphs. A trimac is extremely aggressive. I wouldn't worry about the cichlid aggression to the gar either. Most cichlids are only aggressive to other cichlids, and gars are very tough fish. I doubt a cichlid could ever do any real damage to a gar's tough scales.

when i first got my gar, i had oscars with him and they picked on him. no real damage but he was stressed out and i didnt like that. he is a truly peaceful beast as he does not chase any fish, not even a baby CL.

If you got rid of the convict and JD you could probably get 2 males. I wouldn't go with a breeding pair in the community though.

I agree that you should get the lyonsi. Great fish...I had a couple a few months back that I regret getting rid of but needed the tank room.
