They had a show on National Geographic last night I think it was called "Amazing Amphibians" and they had one on there. They can live 30+ years at least thats what the one guy had his for.

almighty amphibians on animal planet but those guys are cool they get pretty big and three toed amphiumas are native to south bootheal of mo and further sout in the cypress swamps drainage ditches ect.
I started out with mine in a 55 gallon then moved it to a 125 gallon. When doing internet searches also include congo eel!!!

It didn't outgrow the 55, I changed the 55 to saltwater and gave Houdini a larger home. I also had a better hood on the 125. The amphiuma gets to a about 40 inches full grown so a 55 should be ok.
*Warning: Don't keep with stingrays, the stingrays will get bit. Mine did really good with 6 Oscars and a pleco in the 125, but bit one of my stingrays.
