An actual black dempsey

This is not black from being the most dominant in the tank he's at the bottom of the food chain in his tank and he's 3 inches and been this color since I bought him

I don't see anything unusual about it...definitely not a different color strain or anything along those lines.
 
In nature JDs vary tremendously from fish to fish, there are at least 4 in this shot from Cenote Cristalino, the darkest is in the crevice on the left.

Typical normal Dempsey. Its that color cause your fish is at the bottom of the pecking order. If it were at the top it would be displaying its true colors.
 
I consider this a subdominant coloration. Usually the pale yellow or pale body is stressed or sickly.

Looks like my jd but when I bought mine it was solid black had to argue with the girl at petsmart cause she thought it was an oscar but after I got it home and settled in it faded some still pretty dark tho.
