An actual black dempsey

Which is not abnormal, doesn't mean its something other than a normal Jack Dempsey.
 
Might have something to do with that Mayan end of the world thing.;) Mine's like a lava lamp, but he's never been that dark. With my new blue light he looks -- you guessed it -- blue.

I concur with the general consensus of the JD being subdominant, my 4" JD is thriving at the lower half of the food chain, and displays the same colouration.

However this is where things get interesting, a tank of JD's at my work may hold anywhere between 20 and 80 specimens, each tank holding the same size, be it 1", 2", 3". Without fail, there is only ever 1, perhaps 2 specimens that display the black colouration. Tank is completely bare, and the rest of the fish display usual light JD colours.

So that raises questions about sub dominance, but that seems to be the answer in home aquaria, but not at a wholesaler. Weird?
