OK here goes. I am a member of 2 different forums. I only comment or ask about sa/ca cichlids because thats all I have experience with. However, in the world of Aquaria we have certain responsibilities which separte us into fish keepers and fish havers. SO... In the last year or 2 I've been participating in these forums I have learned an awful lot about fish keeping, species compatibility and tons of fish i never knew existed.
now for the question... what do we do when a forum participant asking for our opinions rejects our advice and continues mistreating their fish? This question of mine came about after a young man asked what cichlids he could put into a 22 liter planted tank? This tank was already overstocked with 29 fish!!!
Species included: 12 "Sparkling Gouramis" (Trichopsis pumila), 11 "Pygmy Rasboras" (Boraras maculatus), and 6 "pygmy Cories" (Corydoras pygmaeus)
22Liter = 5.8 gallons = .206 gallons per fish.
When I (and the moderators) tried to explain the error, we were dismissed and told that overstocking is "crap" and that you can't overstock a tank if you change water once per week. I felt my face get red on the spot
What a frustrating scenario. I wanted to strangle the little creep. I can't help but feel responsible for straightening them out, but what do we do when they ask and then ignore the advice? Just sit back and do nothing???
I'd like to think there's a way to deal with such people, so I was wondering if anyone had any success doing something about it? Similar things happen in the stores all the time too. people mixing incompatible species and such, even after getting proper advice on BASIC fish requirements they should've looked up themselves in the first place
Had to vent so I hope some of you can relate. What are your opinions?
