I really don't think you have need for concern. Give them a few days and they should establish turf and level out. You gotta give them more than a couple hours.

Was told by lfs owner to take jag out and put Dempsey in for a few hours, change decor then mix jag. This morning the jag didn't race out for his food and was hiding behind a sponge filter. I didn't see any wounds. I will keep working with them

This will happen till one is the victor and the other backs down. Usually mixing a solo fish with one other fish is bad as the dominant one will usually kill the other one. You could mix the decor about and then add a couple of cons just to give them something to chase.

havnt had a chance to mess with them yet,had a reptile show to go today,

I agree. Also, like another person said, once there is a victor, they should figure out their places and get along ok.
