An Impossible Dream of Mine, iqs Starting to Become Possible

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That method of feeding is a good one. I feed many times a day instead of one big meal. It leads to less waste. So feed small amounts frequently. Also, the foods you feed make a big difference. Brine shrimp have almost no nutritional value. Mysis are good. New Life Spectrum pellets are an absolute must have. Something veggie based including Nori sheets are also a good thing to use.

Ok thanks for the tip I'll try syring feeding them for now and see how that goes, I usually mix pelltets with mysis, and ahve nori sheets or fresh graccileria on a clip.

You could target feed the naso tang with tongs; that should lead to less food wastage.

What do you put on a tong? I'm saying doesn't thier need to be large portions of food on it?

@Big One

I will see if the lfs has them as I heard good things about them...it will probably all come down to $$

If your Tangs are anything like mine - run into the rocks everytime the tongs go into the water (my case anemones) - target feeding tangs is mission impossible w/ tongs. The seaweed clips/rocks are key. As for heaters I've been using Theo's forever on all my tanks ( Salty, Datniod, Cichlid, Predatory Charciformes, and large Piranha Tanks x 2 (smallest tank I own w/fish 75 gal). I have 2 in each tank, that's alotta heaters, 14 total. In the past 5 years I've replaced 4 - 2 burnt out - 2 destroyed by Piranha.

I agree and disagree about the brines, if your buying comercial "adult" brines yes they are generally lacking, but if your rear them yourself, feeding them quality phyto (specifically isochrysis is ideal) then they are almost as good as any other live feed. The only reason they are considered nutritionally defficient is because they lack DHA, and store bought brines are often barely fed or not fed at all, resulting in a "empty" stomach, when you feed them with Iso (a DHA rich phyto) they become "gut loaded" and their nutritional profile evens out. Would I say that they should be the only source of food even gut loaded? No. What about as a supliment to regular feeding of other things? Yes. If you culture your own brines/phyto, they are a far cheaper alternative that is comperable to other much more expencive live food stuffs, but again only as a supliment not a staple.

You are right if cultured they are nutritious. I was assuming store bought brine shrimp.

Hey Everybody,

Here are update pics of entire tank:

The duncans are making a comeback after a few months

The sponge not looking to good

Red Mushrooms look like they are finally opening up more

Toadstool is just huge, currently not shown in the picture it is even more open (It needs fragging lol if anyone has any info on fragging toadstools please let me know, btw only gonna take a little piece off from it after the holidays...as a gift lol?)

Button corals doing amazing, drooping polyps on the rocks...getting annoying ( By any chance can I pluck them off the rocks with a tweezer and glue them to an isolated rock?)

That coral that I forgot it's name (red and green)...looks good

Elephant ear is just stunning, pretty sure these shrooms can't be fragged..as I've been told they don't make shrooms they just get bigger and bigger!

Hairy Mushrooms....just looken like hairy mushrooms I guess lol looks good

Any comments/concerns/suggestions please let me know (I know the naso is getting too big, will be removed shortly...any replacement ideas lol)

Everything is looking good! Keep it up!

The elephant ear will make shrooms once it gets big enough, but it has a lot of growing to do.

I wouldn't frag the toad, just let it grow!

Exactly what I was thinking, why not just let the shroom grow, however thier is a problem the object it's on literally has no space for the trunk/foot to grow...unless he just makes his stem attach to nearing rocks...

Also I f i was to frag it, not like I was gonna cut it up into like 15 peices like people do lol I was just gonna take a quarter size to half dollar size portion of it's disc and place it on a plug...Curious on fragging as I can't wait to try it lol!!!!

Probably in a few weeks I'm gonna pick up some other lps like frogspawns...of coarse it depends on water quality and stability of these corals..

Also nonstop this is random but however do you know how fast/slow graccileria grows under 5000k bulb? Curious because my tangs LOVE IT!!!! They tear it up over night...

Btw I defiantly picked up that toadstool for 3 reasons:

1- It has been at the LFS Reef Tank (under leds) for more then 6 months!
2- Only cost $50..which I didn't pay at all because they took my old fixture light back for 200 credits
3-It is repose to be one very very hardy coral which is what I like!

The toadstool will likely bond to the rocks around it, so as long as you don't plan to move it, it shouldnt be a problem. I used to culture Graccileria.... but I can't remember how fast it grew... all I remember is I had good chunck of it on hand to keep up production with the rate it was being eatten (but I had quite a few herbavours). Basically the more light the faster it grows (within reason) also you can leave the culturing lights on 24/7 to increase growth, and you will have to "fertalize" the water occationally to keep the nutrients high enough for it to grow. It's also a good idea to keep the water moving quickly enough that the Graccileria is blown around a bit (but not to hard) so that more of the algae is exposed to light preventing die offs on lower parts. Also airration of some sort is nessisary.
