I wonder what the "challenge" is with keeping Blue crabs in freshwater during winter months. I know that Salinity lowers the freeze point of water a little, but I can not imagine that it is temperature that causes the challenge! The Bay is as cold as freshwater. It is my understanding from local watermen that the blue crab buries itself in the mud during the winter months.
My pond is dredged to 15' deep and the surface has NEVER frozen over entirely since I moved there in 1979. The main spring feed always has around a 20 to 30' radius of unfrozen surface around the enterance. We have had two blizzards this year without blocking the main spring feed.
Does anyone know what "blue crabs do not do well in freshwater in winter months mean? Do they perish, or does this just mean that their growth rate slows tremendously during the "colder months" which I would expect!
