Around a month ago I swapped my Hystrix group for some BD pups.

The BD's parents were F1, I'm told, both parents had broken spots, eclipse/polo spots.

All the pups are growing at similar rate, a comfortable 4" disc I'd say now.

What's interesting to me is that two of the pups are developing spotting that is clearly eclipsing now and some spots breaking up, both these are female. They are also very black.
The male is still a very light grey base colour and his spots are larger and all are solid. He's the best looking of the trio IMO.

Just wondering on what you all think to the theory that perhaps the male staying light base/grey is maintaining the more desirable solid and larger spotting than his sisters. Is there anything in it? I know that the pups will change dramatically between now and maturity.

Very nice BDs! I personally like the females better, but I've seen major gender differences in certain rays. At least with CO discus, when ever he has marble pups the females always have less spots and with other marbles (cant judge with his because I have only seen pups) the adult females are usually darker. Never heard of that with BDs though. The male just might be a late bloomer.

Verry nice trio of bd pups I also prefere the females at this stage but I would imagion the male will turn a darker base as he matures as they all have a lot of changing to do yet

I think it's just a late bloomer and don't have any fear it won't change to black, really just wondering if the delay in turning black goes hand in hand with solid spot formation.

Interesting on the marbles, thanks for the input

Thanks Daz.

They've all changed quite a bit in the short period I've had them, especially the females which have a lot of new spots coming through.

Great looking pups Mike. Not sure on the theory though. I have had pups stay grey for some time but all go black eventually and normally by the time they are just a few months old. Sometimes the light colour sand can make the base colour of the pup stay light a little longer.
