an open wound

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ok, you should really provide us with more info. Tank size, water temp, water paramaters, everything that rallysman mentioned before. Also what do you try to feed your cat? How long have you owned your catfish? Have you tried feeding him after lights out? How long has your tank been established? How often do you clean/do water changes? The more info the easier it is to help you. If you don't have test kits of your own simply take a bottle of it to your lfs and they should do a free full range test or very cheaply. After you find the results post them here for us to help you. For your info my catfish bang each other up all the time in fights for territory, and also on the large stones I use for their substrate. That brings another question to mind what decorations do you have in the tank and what's your substrate and filtration like? Avoid carbon if at all possible. One of my hybrids had half his tail ripped off by my larger one and it grew back in 2 weeks most of the way.

I DID A WATER CHANGE ON THE 8TH AND ADDED NEW CARBON TO THE FILTERS
THE 18" ALBINO CHANNEL CAT WONT EAT HE JUST LAYS THERE IN HIS 85 GALLON TANK THE TEMP IS AT 77-78 HE CRASHES INTO THE SIDE OF THE TANK AT FULL FORCE PLUS HIS OPEN WOUND IS THE SIZE OF A DIME ITS REDISH LIKE ITS BEEN BLEEDING I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO PLEASE HELP

They are trying to help. It sounds like you don't know what your water parameters are, if you do post them up. Everyone wants to help but you have to give the required info.

also sounds like you are fairly new to the hobby put in some melafix to start the healing process. Sounds like your cat gets spooked and runs into the sides of the tank. That tank is a lil small for an 18" channel. Remember he's still small he'll get a lot bigger. The problem will only get worse as he grows. I think he's probably stressed from the small tank, and possible bad water parameters. If his tank it lighted cut the lights he's a catfish and is for the most part nocturnal (active at night) Light can stress some catfish and make them skittish. Channel cats have been recorded over 40 lbs. and can definitely reach over 30 inches if properly cared for. I would say you need him either in a pond or huge aqaurium. Lucky for you he's a channel and can handle extremes in weather and water parameters. If you do decide to keep him and he makes it, you'll need to upgrade to a tank that is at a bare minimum 30" front to back. He'll at least be able to move easily. Being a catfish also you should do 50% water changes 2 or 3 times per week. On another note sometimes catfish just won't eat. I have had a rtc that went for 3 months without a bite, I did huge water changes everyday, and he lost a lot of mass, after 3 months he started eating again, but while he wasn't eating I was going nuts worried about him. My hybrid rtc x tsn just started eating again after a 3 week fast. He had swallowed some large rocks and kinda lost his appetite with them. Just today he ate 3 half chicken breasts I am happy to report. Good luck and keep us updated. Get your water tested PLEASE!!!!

If you did a water change and new carbon filters at the same time your acid levels may have spiked causing stress. Need to know all water conditons to help out like PH, amonia, nitrate and temp. So far only temp info has been provided, and like the other have said a larger tank would help, these cats like to swim and that tank does not allow much of that for his current size.
Also try and keep things dark, that may help him calm down a bit and allow the current wound to heal, from there you will need to take measures to make sure future damage is avoided.

Looks like he just rammed the side of the tank, assuming it's the pic in your avatar.

Clean water, some melafix (as directed) and clean water should let him heal right up.
If he's active and keeps rubbing the tank (which looks like what might have happened) you'll have to upgrade his tank.

An upgrade is probably due anyway.
Very clean water will help too:)

What is your water change schedule, and again....water paramaters.

:nilly: must have paramaters:nilly:  wonder if he'll ask what to do again without params! :naughty: JK good luck on getting the cat healed up!

ph should be fine then, can you provide other params? I think the wound is probably just from too much contact with the glass. If it aggrevates him enough then he won't eat.
