Anaerobic Bacteria in Freshwater Aquariums?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Jafrias, WOW, that was a lot of information to read through. The question & answer section stated a lot of info regarding the different nitrifying bacteria (Question 23 - pages 50 to 54 and Question 28 - pages 67 to 71).

Thanks for the link.

In this conversation I would like to exclude products that remove ammonia directly, preventing the development of nitrates… I would like to focus on the use of Anaeobic bacteria used in the denitrification of nitrates into nitrogen gas in freshwater tanks only……

There are some Media Manufacturers that claim their Media supports Anaerobic Bacteria… But I have never once heard of a (healthy) freshwater tank not accumulating nitrates as a result of the nitrification process… Despite the fact many people use (what I consider) excessive amounts of Bio Media…

So if you use a Media that boasts being able to support Anaerobic Bacteria… please share your experience as to whether or not you believe they do… and to what degree the effect is…
Yep. Tagging

I've heard you say that before and have made a mental note of it... and thus appreciate/respect your input when I am rambling about Bio Filtration...

So based on your experience in waste water treatment... adapted to your understanding of home aquaria... complimented by your personal experience in home aquaria...

Do you think Bio Media such as Matrix can actually cater to anaerobic bacteria when used in a typical filtration situation (such as in a baseket in a canister/sump/HOB)?

Hello, I was looking into information about denitrifying bacteria and I found this threat. I created a profile just to answer your question. This is the 4th week without changing any water in my tank. I have a Biocube 29 with 3 cichlids in there (I do not want to put any more) I use Matrix in between the second and third chamber (where the sponge was) I tested nitrates today (twice just to make sure) and it is zero... I work at petco and I could not believe it, so I took the water to work to test it again with the strips and it was still zero. I can claim that Matrix works for me and my set up. I have natural sand from the beach that I collected and clean very well before using it.
I hope this works for you.

Welcome too MFK.
How long has the tank had fish in it?
I am curious about this, as I run a matrix filled denitrator.

It has been a year now... I tried to avoid overfeeding; however, one of them is quite large and he eats a lot. In the first chamber I have long piece of microfiber and then floss that goes all the way from top to bottom. Also, in the first chamber I have a suspended bag of chemipure elite. In the second chamber I have purigen. I have the regular bioballs and then the Matrix in between the second and third chamber. I am thinking about adding a phosphate pad... that is my only issue. My tap water comes already with 3.0 ppm.

The purigen will reduce the total nitrogen load. I have to add sugar, in order too reduce nitrates. I am curious if their might be different strains of anaerobic bacteria. That might work differently.
My anaerobic chamber also removes phosphate, and then sulfates if I am feeding it too much.
My main additive is silicate remover, phosguard.
My tank is also overload on the fish side.
30 gallon with a 20 gallon wet/dry bioballs.
My matrix media is in separate container and gets about 15 GPD flow through it. Completely anaerobic.

I have a 4 stage cannister hooked up on my 200 gal that is filled with bio home and bacteria house only running 200 gph , the bio home and bacteria house is great for anerobic-bacteria , the slow gph is great for breaking down oxygen and the correct gph for my 36w uv

How effective is it at reducing nitrates?

I am very interested in this as well, if this does work would be an bonus on top of adding lvl2 sterilization..

I ran a Marineland C-360 filled with mostly Biohome and some Sera Siporax on a heavily stocked tank. Had a Sunsun prefilter for mechanical filtration so I didn't have to disturb the bio media as often. Had a ball valve on the return line to slow it down to about 100 gph. I saw no noticeable nitrate reduction after several months.
