Anaerobic Bacteria in my shark pool

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It's only on the bottom layer of sand in certain areas. Problem really is I used various different sands including fine grain and pool sand (silica). Both can cause my problem but I didn't think anything of it because I have great flow

it's not a thin film on top of the sand is it?

nope, not diatom if thats what youre thinking.
Its only visible when you stir a large part of the sand, comes straight up from the bottom.

not to ask if you're stupid... but you are sure it's not just ****e or dirt or stuff off the bottom of the glass/wood/ fiberglass/etc?

it smells like rotten eggs?

cause if it's only an inch deep it REALLY shouldn't be anaerobic

Haha I'm not an expert but definitely not a noobie. It's anaerobic. Without a doubt, smells like sulfur, bottom layer of sand, the actual sand grains are BLACK. My options are to go with no sand or double or triple my sand bed depth. Otherwise it will be a constant bbattle.

With big tanks, it's a battle. More sand will just mean more of an issue if it's not moving. It's a headache I deal with daily.

So I guess stirring is the only way to go then?

making it a deep sand bed wouldn't help at all?

no a deep sand bed will not work if theres nothing stirring it up.the rays should work fine seenig there always blowing in the sand looking for food

couple of big goatfish?

what kind or sharks? piscivores?
