I'm getting results with just 2" of sand in some tanks. It definitely can't hurt if you do it right. I just added a big shoebox-sized container to my Oscar's sump. I'll update in about three months if it matures and makes a dent. It's about 6" deep, so it's fort of a sloppy test to see if extremely deep sand will effective enough to warrant modular use in a sump. (clearly, good sifters are a must! I'm using just MTS now, but might add some tubifex or something in awhile)
