anchor worms

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My black aro had them when I got him...I used Jungle parasite clear. All fish in the tank are great and no sign of any issues. The other plus was that everyone got a round of medication for any internal parasites that may have been present.

Great!

Do it every week and you will never have any problems, will you?

Exactly, hail to the previous speaker :D

Learn something about fishes, then about diseases and then about medications...

At any point did I say that it was good to do every week?

For most people taking a fish from the tank and taking a pair of tweezers to a anchor worm isnt exactly easy and/or advisable. Especially when you are talking a large expensive fish that is already stressed from shipment.

Before calling people stupid you may want to realize that everyone isn't as accomplished of a fish keeper as you apparently are.

Hate to reopen old threads (wounds?) but I was reading this because a stupid angelfish I brought home against my better judgment has a few good sized anchor worms on it. Just curious, when you mentioned Dimlin, ("Dimillin"?) do you actually know what that is or are you just against all medications on principle? Because Dimlin is a chitin inhibitor, which means it interferes chemically with the development of chitin on arthropods, more specifically, crustaceans. So it does absolutely nothing in the tank until it is time for said invertebrates (fish lice, anchor worms) to molt, which they must do several times to complete their life cycle. When they do molt, they are unable to do so successfully because their new exoskeleton is improperly formed, and therefore die in the process. A dosage of dimlin administered over a period of time equivalent to one or slightly longer than one life cycle of the parasite you are trying to eradicate is 100% effective at eliminating any and all crustaceans in your tank. Wouldn't want to treat a tank with crayfish or shrimp, but for fish, Dimlin has absolutely no effect when dosed correctly. NONE. If you doubt it, look it up, there are several sites with documented toxicity levels in certain fish, levels which I might add are many many times the recommended dosage in an aquarium. So in reply to:
A chemical always harms all fishes in a tank
Do some research, general statements like that can be misleading. Every chemical has different properties, so get to know them. There is plenty of research out there about the toxicity of common chemicals used to treat fish, so look it up and make an informed decision on whether or not to treat with chemicals.:)

Good Question, I love a good discussion, but my aim is methodological not as superficial as most discussions are....

You ask me to prove, well prove your general statements first:

So it does absolutely nothing in the tank
Really? Well if you mean the Glass you might be right, I am concerned about fishes....

I am deeply interested how you want to disprove my main statement that a treatment without any chemical does always less toxical harm to the fishes than any chemical treatment...

...so if there is a way without chemicals in my opinion it is just a matter of being bone idle just to use chemicals....

That´s my opinion ;)

Hi Eric,

of course you are right with your statement, but I actually call everybody a stupid who really is in keeping fishes with the brain turned off, this includes in my opinion always taking the easy way without basic knowledge on the physiological circumstances and especially without the necessary equipment to solve a problem correctly....

...anybody who fits to ...it must be fast, cheap, easy and so on.

Everyone can feel free to feel adressed or not....

Anchor worms are no big deal...that´s all ;)
