Anchovy, Smelt, and Silverfish for food?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
What was the experience?
Well,my dealings were with frozen smelt and years ago when was into armatus I had a perfectly healthy one up and die after eating some smelt for the first time. I had forgotten about that and recently I was reminded of the danger of smelt when I gave a piece to my Chinese perch. It has been acting sickly ever since.

Oh crap. Maybe I shouldn’t risk it? Was it the fish itself or the source?
I suspect that it could be something in the packaging/freezing process as in both cases I can recall an odd chemical like smell.I have not checked with fresh caught smelt to determine if it has that same smell.I just prefer to avoid it altogether.

I’ll be super mindful of the scent. This is for human consumption so I’m hoping I’m good to go.

I’m worried now. Maybe I’ll go find a large Junk fish to test it on.

My only suggestion would be to soak or inject flesh/body with boyd vitachem( I use it when power feeding live food for my chaca chaca). Some smelt has been shown to contain thiaminase. Better to be cautious.

Thank you for the tip. I’ll have to pick some up.

Should I just throw the smelt out?
