Anchovy, Smelt, and Silverfish for food?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I feed smelt regularly fresh from the Asian market regularly mixed in with massivore and tilapia. Haven' had a bad experience. A balanced diet is the most important imo. As far as anchovy goes I have no experiene. I think if you feed primarily only one food for very long time is not good as theu need a varied diet to get all the different nutrients.

Thank you.

I have then eating the anchovy, frozen silversides, and four of the eight are now eating FD Krill. Only 1 runt won’t anything but live. Should I keep at it and expect the runt to come along?

Yep,as long as that runt is given what it is used to eating it will ignore the other stuff.Discontinue feeding the live and it will eventually get hungry enough and go after what the others are eating.

I’m worried this runt will become lunch. The three biggest bass have put on some size and it’s only a matter of time.

How many and what kinds of cichla do you have, what is the size difference between runt and the others and what is the tank size?

I fed smelt , silver sides and tilipia to my bass , pikes, dats etc. , depending on size of smelt , silver sides ...I would insert an Hikari food stick or carni stick along the thawed smelts, silver sides spine ... bass grow rather quickly on this diet puts them in great breeding shape. My Kels spawned continually on this diet.

I have six Orinocensis and two intermedia. Largest orinos and the intermedia are close to 7-8 inches. Smallest is 5 inches.

Tank is a 280. 80x34x24. All the bass in here along with the zebrina and flagtail will go into my 535 when it’s up. 5 Kelberi and a group of geo Altifrons will come into this tank to join the multispinosa.

Thank you for the tip. Did this help in getting them trained onto pellets?

You sound like me I like to try and not starve the fish to much but if you stop feeding it live it should come along in a few days. One thing i learned helped was feeding in the smae spot and drop it a little at a time. This will have the bigger ones splashing and bringing attention to the area eventually the runt will jsut get caught up in the frenzy and grab something you are feeding. This worked for me gettiung them onto pellets because then I would drop 1 or 2 smelt or tilapia they would eat it expecting me to drop in another piece of tilapia or smelt i would drop in massivore them expecting it to be cut fish they would jump and eat it before they realized it was a pellet. After this a few times all were pellet trained and accepted anything i fed. Some still preffered cut fish to pellet and vice versa but all would eat every feeding just one day some would gorge pellets others eat a few the next day vice versa with cut fish.
