uummmmm...seriously??? where was this "much discussion" part, as i'm sure any sane members of the gar forum would have spoken pretty strongly against this. other than potential broken backs from possible startling, the gars shouldn't be in any danger (although that one issue is a big one); be prepared for little warning when they do decide to tear up the armatus. time will tell like you said --

when i initially had the idea of mixing the two, i had thought up the possible dangers and roughly arrived at the same conclusion as yourself.

my main concern was that the armatus would startle the gars into breaking their backs, hence most of my "discussion" was with local fish keepers who own/ed armatus of this size and up. most, if not all the owners observed the fish to be much calmer and to hardly dart around upon hitting roughly a foot long, which is the size of my current two. i'm not really worried about aggression from the armatus as the gars have already established themselves as higher in the heirachy...and they're pretty huge.

i'm also expecting the size of the tank to help with any potential darting occurences. the gars do spook occasionally (thanks to the african aro), but they have the space to almost always slow down and/or stop before hitting into the tank walls.

regarding aggression from the gars, that is my current main concern actually. however, i have hardly observed aggression from them outside of feeding time. in this case, only time will tell ; but do note that i actually have put decent thought into this, and it is not an attempt at keeping an "in" fish or whatever.

i do have back up plans that can be activated instantly to seperate both groups of fish should the situation call for it (although i am prepared to go as far as to saying i don't think i will).

thanks for the feedback though Solomon, will have to admit i was not looking forward to your reply on the topic, :P but decided after weighing the factors that it was something i believed might work.

haha shussshhh...

will do;)

very cool!

ill deff be watching this thread to see how it works out

i would say everything will be ok unless one of the gars trys to eat one of the armatus....

wow, gar looks at the armatus and looks like it thinks it's food.

Kiss the Armatus good bye!

^ thanks, definately good to hear that from you. i remember fang was a little nuts, which was why i didn't go to you for advise :P

My issues with Armatus was that it's not the issue of them being in the tank with other predators not getting along. It's the accidental jabs of the tooth in the eye of my other fish. All it takes is the frenzy that happens when feeding occurs or the territorial bump by the Armatus.... If you don't care about one eyed tank mates then leave it be.... if so than it's just a matter of time before one of your fish looses an eye =-(
