I guess I can't control how you view my statement. All I said "looks like a bigger tanks in your future" and you replied not for 5-10 years. Well 5-10 years is in the future. I've kept gars I know how big they can get. Your spotted and longnose can reach 3'+. Your Cuban can reach 6'+. Will yours get that big? don't know. How long will that take, who knows. That is in the furture if you still have them in 5 years. I do know that in 5 years they will be bigger if you feed them well keep the water optimum for them.

Show me a captive spotted or florida gar at 3 feet.
Almost any big fish will not get as big as they do in the wild when in captivity.
I don't see captive 4 foot H. Armatus, I haven't seen any cuban gar above 3 feet, nor have I seen a wallago attu in captivity ever get to 8 feet.
You might as well tell people to stop keeping fish in tanks.:D

EDIT - MyGiants - I can see an upgrade far more necessary in your case ;).

A 1200g tank is in my fishes future coming next spring:D

Your right I guess you showed me:redface:

I have grown fish that got bigger then books say they get. Captive fish generally eat better then wild fish and can potentially grow bigger if given the room and optimum care. As far as the gars I suppose they do get stunted in home aquariums. His will be fine in there 6'x4' tank for now maybe forever like he says.:)

watched the link in your sig, wow!!! your tanks are jam packed!!

smartlove_518 - many cold blooded organisms have been known to have their growth limited by the environment rather than age. Growth always comes down to 1 limiting factor, in humans in the developed world that is usually down to genetics, since we have good food and environment that enables our growth. In the wild, it usually has more to do with food availability and in the case of fish water quality.

EDIT - MyGiants - I can see an upgrade far more necessary in your case ;).
totally agree...thanx for the clarification..i actually didnt know that..

It does seem like a lot on the vids and there are. But when you watch them in person there is plenty of room for all of them. For some reason they all like to hang at the front of the glass or sometimes there all on one side of the tank. There's always lots of open spaces in the tank. I like the look of lots of fish, my tank is not boring to watch!:)

Care to name these said fishies?
I'm not saying it's completely impossible for a fish to reach it's maximum size, or go over that, but it is true in the case of the majority of fishkeepers that do not have the resources for say, a 1200g tank!

Just a couple fish I'm keeping right now in my 300g. The Lemon barb Axelrods Atlas says 15cm, mine are 38cm+. Hampala barb Atlas says 15cm, mine are 20cm at the moment and still growing. But there have been others I don't keep any more. I'll have to think about it..
