yes a local glass store made me a deal i cant refuse unless its not possible to safely do with ply. a 10'x2'x3/8" sheet for 174 or a 1/2" sheet for 225... so im going to look at a few of the larger DIY tanks and see how i have to do it. im going to use either 2x4s stacked vertical or 2x6s it would be easier to use 2x4s and predrill using a 4"screw

I would defiantly go with the 1/2" glass or even thicker. Mainly cause your kid is gonna be old enough to bang on the glass to see the fishes and it would suck to see it blow.

Friendly constructive suggestion: .50 over a 10ft span at 2ft will be dangerous.

i think it would be better to up it to 3/4" thick atleast that way you know you wouldnt be taking the chance of it busting, and having to get the wet vac out to clean all the water out the floor!

You can Google "aquarium glass thickness calculator" and find a bunch of useful sites on this. Most will say .50 as the minimum for a 8ft tank at that depth.

dang everyone else here told me 3/8" was the minimum for a 8' tank

there is 3" lip around the tank so the glass is 2' high but only 18" is no behind wood

Provided that you are properly supporting the top and not leaving it open to bowing there isn't a problem. use the 1/2" though
