The true altums should have a sharp indentation just above their eyes, erect fins and fixed brown bars. Some altums do have red spots lining their faces. The Peruvian scalares mistaken for altums lack the exaggerated erect fins and their bodies are more elongated compared to the true altums. There is emphasis in italic on first sentence.
