I have started a 72gal planted tank with small tetras, rasboras, assorted corydoras, ottocinclus and couple of ancistrus plecos. I thought that it would be ok to add juvie Angels to the tank so that they would grow up and be used to the smaller fish. There is ample shelter space in the plants for the small fish, but I don't want them to be hiding all the time. Will the angels get aggressive and dominate the other fish as they mature?

While angels are small they are great around small fish. When angels get larger they actually hunt and eat tetras. Usually the smaller ones like neons. You would be surprised at just how big angels actually get.

Thanks for the info. I have heard similar stories, but hoped the smaller fish would be ok if larger than angels mouth, but if they will be hunted then all bets off. I thought of discus, and have seen pictures of them with cardinal tetras in same tank. But I do not want to change water more than once every one two weeks in this tank with great filtration.

You could probably get away with medium sized "smaller" fish like dwarf gouramis maybe even some blackskirt tetras..

I have a 2 juvie angels in my comunity tank. Now that I know how agressive they can be, I am going to start another tank to move them to. Are there any other South American cichlids that would fair well in a tank with them?

I would stick to just angels in the tank. Chances are you won't get a pair, but if you do they can kill fish many times their size, and much more aggressive. You can do rams, but watch for cross-breeding. Discus are another choice, but I've heard some horror stories about mixing the two.

as a general rule, don't trust a full grown angel around any fish under 2" in length.

Keyholes :)

i've always kept rummynose tetras with my angels..never had any problems, the only fish mine have ever eaten was a couple neons when i didnt know any better

i have kept them with cardinals though..
