angel tank mates?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
so will i be able to keep at least 6 of them or will i only be able to have 2

Get some opaque plastic, and split the tank in half or even thirds. Drill several small holes to allow for water flow. I've even used egg crate without much problem.

i thought 6 would be the max limit i could put in a 55g long

That's what a lot of folks say. You will be amazed how much you can have in a 55 with less than the water change the people who have six in them says you should do. ;) Do what you think you can. If you think it can be done you might, if you think you can't you won't.:)

i don't really care if they breed or not i don't wanna section off my tank at all so are they gonna fight to the death or what

If you have one pair, and 3 that don't, it is likely you will end up with one or two dead angels. If you get two pairs, they should claim territories that are opposite, but that isn't to say they won't kill each other. If you get two pair, it is very likely the fifth will get killed.

Sure, Angels like other cichlids get territorial when they breed. Most likely no other angel will die in the same tank when an angel pair forms. All the pair will do is try to fend off the other angels from their eggs. Sure some folks have ended up with angels dead. But to generalize that it will happen all the time is stretching it.

I've been breeding angels for over five years now and I have yet to see dead angels when a pair form in my pair off tanks, which goes anywhere from 20g to 55g. Sometimes I don't even notice there's a new pair until the eggs get to the wiggling stage.

However, when pairs form, the best course of action is to separate them from the other angels or fish either to their own separate tank or by sectioning their tank.

I've had two pairs of breeding angels lay eggs in the same tank with no problem and it was only a 10 gallon tank.;)

All my breeding pairs are in 10 gallon tanks with only a corner filter. I have 10 or more pairs at any given time.

I've even seen local breeders use 5 gallon tanks for their pairs.

I highly recommend that you don't take that advice. A 10 gallon is WAY to small for an angel. A 20H is the minimum for the fish just to be able to stretch their fins.

Take what information you wish. I've had several fish die to breeding pairs over the last 11 years.

It is not a recommendation or advice. It is a statement of fact. To take one fact and apply that and generalize it to apply to everything else is wrong. Do whatever you think makes sense. Nothing in life is cast in concrete except maybe taxes, death, and change.

I hope my angels never figure out that 10 gallons is too small to breed in...

There's a minimum? Get real. The only thing that minimizes things are lack of imagination and close minds. 11 years huh? Thank you. You just made my day. I'm so glad it took me less than that to figure out it can be done in less than 20g.

20 g or even 55g is fine but a minimum?

Keeping minds open can lead to many possibilities.

A fully grown angel can have a total height of 8", for the smaller types, a 10 gallon has a height of 12". No where did I say the minimum to breed is 20, I said that the minimum these fish should be kept in is 20H. That is necessary for the fish to properly grow, and not be stunted.

I must have really sweet angels because they never mess with my pleco or with each other and they are all paired off or mature.. in my other tank of matured angels i added some tetras and rainbows and clown loaches .. they all get along great and also a small pleco.. it is a very peaceful tank.. i quess it really depends on the fish personality.. but they have all been together for years..
