Is this a sign of stress? Is there anything I can do? Its in a 20g, 7ph, ammonia is 0 ppm, nitrite is 0 ppm, nitrate is 20 ppm.

How long have you kept the angel?
Have you introduced any new fish there?
What other fish do you have?
Temperature?
What do you usually feed your fish?
What color is its poop?
Any other symptoms?

In addition to all of Lupins questions do a 20-30% water change to lower your nitrates, but test your actual water supply first to make sure your not adding them right back in. Clamped fins and shimmy is stress for sure.

I had him for a month. I moved him and his mate to a cycled 20g tank 2 weeks ago. The temp is at 80 F. I feed them flake and BBS. The female is fine. It was just the male. He died while I was at work.

So should the nitrates be at zero?

So sorry to hear. Ideally, nitrates should be as low as you can get them. Zero is never going to happen but once you get above 20ppm fish start to get stressed. A healthy fish can stand nitrates being around or above 20ppm for short periods, so i dont think thats what killed your fish. Sounds like he was sick already and the nitrate level probably pushed him over the edge.

If he died while you were at work, your nitrate and ammonia levels probably went up. It would be a good idea to do a 50% water change with conditioned water for the remaining female and watch her closely over the next few days. Contrary to what some people might say or believe, regular water changes are the best way to keep fish healthy and are always neccessary when dealing with any sick or stressed fish. Make sure to clean out your gravel too since poo=nitrate.

Thanks for the advice. I did a 50% water change tonight, checked the nitrates again and it was between 5 and 10 after the change. I don't have any gravel in this tank so cleaning was easier than my display tank. Going to keep an eye on the female. How long do you think I should wait until I put her back into the general population?

If the fish is 100% healthy, you can return her to the main tank. Any abnormal behavior yet? How does its poop look?

X2 watch out for white stringy poop. If it looks normal you should be good to go.
