Angelfish Dying (Please Help ASAP!!!)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Care to share what the nitrates were, and what your water change schedule was like before this occurred?

Really hope your angel pulls through.

Nitrates were 140 before the change and they are about 60 or 70 now. Water changes were every other week. I will do another 50% today and keep water changes at weekly. The problem is I am overstocked but have nobody to give my fish to because if I give them to my LFS they will probably wind up going to someone irresponsible.

"The problem is I am overstocked"......or is it under-filtration. You didn't state your total tank stock list or what filter(s) you had on your aquarium. Sounds like you need to add more biological filtration to the mix via an additional canister filter, Hang on the back, etc (I suggest emperor 280 or better a 400 if it will fit). Ate the same time don't turn the tank into a whirlpool as the angels like calm water. Gravel vac the detritus out of your tank EVERY water change if you aren't. Stocking List:

2 2" Blue gouramis
2 2.5" Koi angelfish
3 1.5" penguin tetras
1 1.5" black phantom tetra (I know i need more but I am giving him to somebody soon)
2 2.5" Sailfin Mollies
2 1.5" bronze corydoras (getting another 3 once the tank problems are fixed and I swap some other fish around)
1 3" Striped raphael catfish (going into my 75 in a week)
1 3" Sailfin pleco (going into my 75 in a week)

Plants: anacharis, java fern, java moss

Filter: Penguin 200 HOB (rated for 55 gallons).

The problem I have with frequent water changes is that I have a tall tank so it is hard to get my arm in, I have large gravel (harder to siphon), and I have many plants so it is messy when I uproot them with a siphon. Oh, and my Raphael catfish FLIPS OUT whenever I do a change, darting all arounf the tank and often not eating the day of the change (although he could stand to lose a few :D).

I am euthanizing him now using the ice method (out him in a container full of tank water in a bowl full of ice and cold water with a towel over it for darkness), he was way beyond the point of recovery at this point and it looks like he has tissue damage since he was bleeding a lot.

Thanks to everybody who tried to help but I think he was beyond help the entire time sadly.
