Hmm, that's an interesting idea to leave light on, never tried. Probably would work but in long run it could stress out pair, cichlids do need their sleep.

Very common practice among breeders... To prevent fry from being eaten by other fish in the tank or by the parents on accident.

Oh, is that right? Opposed to separating pairs to breeding tanks. Are you suggesting a community breeding tank?

Sorry for the confusion...
1. it is common to leave the lights on for breeding pairs with fry ( either direct or ambient lighting.)
2. I suggested leaving light on as an alternative while in community tank until eggs hatch then can be siphoned if choses to.
3. I did not suggest a community breeding tank for angels. I said to set up a breeding tank for the pair.
4. Other questions to help you understand, just ask.

Do you suggest 24hr lighting for other species of cichlids?

Not sure if my night (moon) light wasn't bright enough, but that didn't work with my Discus :(

UPDATE:

I moved the pair in to their own tank today. They're currently in a 20 high (24"x12"x16") with no substrate, a sponge for filtration, a piece of flat Quartz if they'd like to lay their eggs on a rock, and a 100 watt heater. The fish are acting normal and doing great, the only problem is temperature. In their old tank (30 long), I used a 100 watt cobalt accu-therm set on 76° and it heated the water to 84°. I'm using the same exact model and wattage heater in the new tank (it's also a brand new heater) and it's only heating the water to 76° with the dial set to 84°, it's the total opposite of the other heater! I don't know what to think, I never have luck with heaters but normally they last at least a couple months before they start acting weird (go room-temp natives!!!). I think 76° should still be warm enough for them to spawn, but what do you all think?

Great! I think they will be fine. In the meantime, you will need to read this article about breeding angels.

Well, they spawned again! Unfortunately, they must have slacked on egg care overnight as over 50% them are covered with white fungus. Hopefully they get better at this. On a positive note, the heater is getting the water to 78-80° at last.
