If you want something South American, I think the tetra suggestion is a good one. I would say don't underestimate the common stuff especially in a larger school in a larger tank like yours. Hatchets, Redeyes, and Diamond Tetras are three that come to mind. There are a ton of catfish that work. I like farlowellas, but raphael or banjo could work.
If you don't mind going the cosmopolitan route, lake inle danios are awesome, scissor tails could be fun in a big group, a school of small loaches is always fun. I like yoyos and pygmy chains. A really big school of harlequin rasboras would be fun as well. If you want other large fish Gouramis are a great one. Full grown pearl leeri or blue or gold gouramis are tought to beat.
