I posted this on the 'illness' tread but no replies...
I lost 2 Angels in almost 2 months. Earlier today I noticed a third acting odd. Now tonight he seems to be following the same pattern the other 2 did when they were on the way out. Not active or swimming staying in one place at the surface, no reaction to food, head facing upward, tail is not flared but almost closed or 'pinched' together. This was our first Angel my son will be so upset if we lose it. We've had him since the end of May. Always greeting us at the glass. Now, just stays in the same spot looking towards the top..

My water reading:

Temp: Steady 82
Ammo:0
Nitrite:0
Nitrate:40
GH:300
Alkaline: 40
pH: 6.8

Last water change ( 30%) 2 wks ago,

It appears from what I've read the GH is too high. I want to save this little one and stop others from dying off. What is the safest and effective way?

That is on my to-do list today. The thing is my GH has been in that range since I set up the tank in June. After a water change the test shows them same result. Am I not taking out enough water I wonder?

Angels need frequent water changes and yes depending on how much water your taking out makes a difference.. why not do a 50% change today...Also it depends on how many angels vs how big the tank... is there enough oxygen in the water... do you have air bubbles set high enough...sounds like they are gasping...

Right now, I have 11 small angels in my 29 but will be moving them to my 55 that I pick up today. When they other two passed I had only 6 Angels. I have a bubblewand that is the length of the tank suctioned on the back...I have a bubblewand for the 55. How do I know if I have enough oxygen? I do have some live plants...

Well looks like I'll be moving my water changes to a weekly basis instead of a biweekly. Is there not a concern with the GH?

Thanks for the reply :)

Hi. I;m certainly no expert but I do keep angels as well as discus.
I treat my angel tank a bit more like a discus tank than a regular community tank. Lots of water changes.. At least 50% and at least once a week. This helps to insure the water quality.. especially in smaller tanks less than 75 gallons.
Don't know how many and what size you had in the 29... Baby angels are very sensitive to water parameters..
Also for future additions,I do recommend you qt any new fish for several weeks before adding them to an established tank.
You might want to try moving the sick angel to a qt tank so you can monitor it and it can be in a more quite less stressful situation. It can be anything like a plastic bin or something as long as you can heat it and aerate it and keep it BB with maybe a plant or rock for the angel to hide behind. You would of course do lots of water changes unless you had a seeded filter. You also might try going to one of the angelfish forums for help. Hope the little one gets better. Let us know your progress and definitely up the water changes and the amount changed. HTH Sue

Thank you Sue. They vary in size. I'm wondering if I induced stress due to overcrowding and not frequent changes. I am doing a 50% change today. My water changes will be weekly from now on as I just adore my Angels :) and want them to thrive. I really don't have a place to isolate this little one at this moment, anything else besides a water change for treatment? Her poop is stringy and white..just read about Hexamita??

Did a 75% w/c because I moved what I had in the 29, into the 55. Water levels are all good. I went to the store and bought Parasite Clear 'Tank Buddies' by Jungle. It seems this little one has an internal parasite Hexamita. Cross your fingers this cures the little fella.

Thanks for the replies :)
