I was thinking of setting up an angelfish pond for the summer. I am going to use a large rubbermaid horse trough for the first year so I can experiment a little. Anyone ever try this with angels.

to MFK's.That's how you raise them back on the farm (fish farm
).If you can, half bury the tank and use the excess dirt to berm up around it. This will help regulate the water temp (Angels don't like fluctuation in anything).
Build a W/D about 1/3 the size of the tank and float water hyacinth and water lettuce in the sump (since it's in the sun) for extra filtering and to keep down algae.
Buffer the return flow so you don't blow the fish all over the tank.
And watch for what kind of leavescan fall in (some are poisonous).
Now to keep the vultures and other critters out...

I grew out several young angels in a 110 Rubbermaind here in the tropics ( I have a lot of shade),They were in for about 4mos, I don't remember any problems. My biggest problem for fish smaller than one ft long are water snakes; I guess you don't have that in the artic.

Yes, that will work. I was told by a breeder to use a container like this for grow out. You put a pump in there to make them swim a lot so they have to use up energy so they eat more and then they grow faster! Just hope no animals find your angels tasty!
Yes that's the biggest problem- I have had a few backyard ponds and I always give up because just when everything is going perfectly, some scavenger will swoop down or climb in and eat all my fish. Maybe you should consider putting some chicken wire over the top of it to keep out any debris or scavengers? I know that's what I will do the next time I get the nerve to try it again. My longest running pond was for six years.
