Angels not looking good after usual 30 % water change.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If its stress then I hope they get happy by just continuing normal water changes. The reason that I know its not the chloramines or ammonia is because in testing the water before and after treatments of the aquasafe shows no ammonia in the water. The treatment is working and the cycle is still good. Also the ammonia levels in this water have always been between 1.5 and 2 ppm. even when the county ran higher levels of chloramine 3-4ppm when doing maintenance I never had any issues.

After closer examination of 2 of them I can see a couple of white spots have formed on them. Possibly ich but I have never seen ich work so fast in killing a fish. Have had ich before and it took weeks for it to even show in the tank. The dead angel showed no signs of ich either. None of the severums are showing any signs though so shouldn't be, but gonna keep an eye on them and run a treatment cycle if it gets any worse.

I do appreciate bouncing ideas off you though. I am trying to get a couple of pics but can't get my camera to connect with my laptop right now.

Some chemicals are known to throw false readings on a test kit. So that might be why your test kit shows that way and with the tank water, the method you use to change water would greatly effect how the fish were effected.

As for the white spots... I have never seen ich work that fast, I've seen fish peppered with ich last weeks before dieing and even then the slime coat didn't peel off.

Same here, and I have never seen ich kill without showing white spots on the body.

And my bio filtration is good. There is actually 110 gallons worth of filtration on the tank. I have 3 filters. One Whisper ex30, one penguin biowheel 200, and one internal 10 gal filter. At the time the filters were only rinsed in the removed tank water. Before you ask about the strange combination of filters, I bought the tank for 50 bucks off a guy on craigslist and it only came with the penguin and internal filter. I had the whisper 30 and figured the tank was gonna need a little more filtration until I can get a canister filter. Both been working fine since we got the tank 3+years ago.

You sound like you got a good handle on what went wrong though, so I'll stop guessing what it could have been.

Glad the others made it through.

I do appreciate your thoughts. I have the feeling I'm not done yet. They still don't look as happy as they were. Keeping fingers crossed.

So an update. I lost 3 of the angels. Discovered that the severums, however small, have been picking them off at night. Moved the remaining 2 to their own tank. The ick was a bi-product of their stress. Everything looks good now. Gonna have to get rid of the severums or the angels. Thinking the angels cause there really isn't many fish that can go with them. That and I want some different fish in my tank.
