Angels with Discus

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Those are stendkers in my pics. The fish did get quite sick at one point and I had some losses, this was a couple years ago though before I got the hang of growing out discus.

How big were the Discus when you got them?

Keep it. See what happens. If you could remove it for a few weeks it will serve 2 purposes. One the discus will be able to clame the tank as there own and not be placed in a tank the angle precieves as it's terratory. Two, it will let you QT the discus. Once you reintroduce the angelfish it should go smoother as the discus will be settled in. If it doesn't work you at least tried. Good Luck. Let us know how it works out and post pictures when you get the Stendkers.

About 3". They were part of my "intro by fire" to discus, growing out discus is easy now. I would make sure you QT and follow all the standard practices of discus keeping. The smaller the discus the more strict you need to be with your water changes and tank maintenance.

I have tried this.
But my Discus were smaller and it didn't end well.
I want to try again with bigger fish, that stand a better chance.
I am thinking either 3 or 4 inch fish.

I have decided that the Angel will have to go.
I have already had a bad expience with Discus. If I give it another go, then the Discus need the best attention and situation they can get. I can always replace the Angel at a later stage.

That's a good plan. Also make sure you get your discus from a good source. A LFS can ruin good fish easily, even stendkers. Have you been over on BIDKA to see where the best sources are where you live? Start off simple, clean the tank out and bleach it then cycle a new sponge filter or two. That way you are starting with a clean slate. Start off bare bottom with sponge filters to get the hang of it then once they are fully grown you can add sand and wood and whatever. 4" fish would be best to start with but can be pricey. You may get a better deal looking at buying from an importer that brings in fish from the big Asian breeders like Tony Tan, Forrest, Wayne Ng etc.

I plan on getting them from Devotedly, who are the direct suppliers of Stendkers
I am wary now of who I get my fish from, following my bad experience. There are Asian suppliers, but not sure who they source their fish from.
And also DD/Stendkers are closer to the water conditions that I have.

This is good to hear. I've got a 1000g tank that I'm thinking of turning into a community tank and love both Discus and Angels. Would be awesome to see them in a tank that size together.

I've kept (and seen) them together with no problem at all, primarily as discus tanks with angels added, not the other way around. In one case it was a discus tank with a large angel pair and even with the angels spawning it wasn't an issue. It can depend on the particular setup and the temperament of the individual angels, which can be variable ime, but so can discus for that matter. According to Heiko Bleher who's spent many years studying their wild habitat, other fish sometimes found swimming with discus in the wild in various locations can include angelfish, Mesonauta, even some species of Crenicichla (article). Not to say they would work in every tank.

Here's the thing with discus and angels imo-- Bleher advises not keeping wild and domestic discus together or discus from different habitats, so as not to introduce them to new pathogens they're not resistant to. And if you go on the Stendker web site, they're not in favor of keeping discus together from different breeders for similar reasons. What I'm getting at is-- the cautions some would give with discus and angels are actually the same for discus and discus. But how many strictly follow this or even know about it?

While I might have done so if I'd read this at the time I started with discus, like a lot of others I was blissfully ignorant back then and kept all manner of discus (wild and domestic, except for heckels) together without a problem (I knew enough to quarantine first) and kept them with angelfish without a problem. I think it's like a lot of things, the cautions are given for a reason, but in most cases you'll be ok if the fish are healthy and well conditioned and from quality sources and you follow reasonable fishkeeping practices.
