Anolis carolinensis 125 Rebuild Enclosure(Pics)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
pretty sick post a final flick when its all planted and full of anoles...

Re: ground cover, I've used spider plants for that. They're easy to grow, they spread quickly, and they have a sort of "grassy" look with the long blade-like leaves. Then something taller and more substantive like a small ficus or 2, that they can climb on.

Something to think about...you're going to want multiple basking spots with this setup rather than the usual hot end/cool end approach. You'll find that each anole will claim a perch under the light as their own, and you want to have enough basking lights so there are prime perches throughout the enclosure. I'd also add some bark slabs etc for egg laying (I assume breeding is in the plans).

It would be interesting to experiment with 2 males in this setup. I probably wouldn't do it in a small enclosure but in this size tank it's possible that each male would claim an end as his territory, and watching them defend their territory would be very interesting. You'd want to be prepared to remove a male if one of them is clearly dominating the other though.

great setup just add a little more substrate to allow proper nesting. The plants mentioned would fit right in with the theme. Good luck I have a 2.3 in my patio (which is enclosed).

if you are doing plants i would probably have a good 5-6 inches of substrate. i also like the sanservia (snake plants). i dont like the tall skinny ones though (have yellow in the leaves) but i have found at steins and a lowes a snake plant that has wide green leaves. id go with those and the added pothos/spider plants for the bottom. the vines and added branches would look really cool. i think i would do more of a peat/soil mix with maybe some spaghnum on the surface. or heck, it would look good with just leave litter on the surface. i would also add your own pill bugs, millipedes and such to help break down waste and dead insects. should help on reducing your need for cleaning. i have this in my whites tree frogs tank. plus for your lizards it will be free food whenever you havent added crickets. i added centipedes to my whites tank just to keep down the population of pill bugs and any baby crickets that hatch out. your anoles will loe centipedes also. (im talking about the little oranges ones from up here in wi that get maybe 2-4 inches) if you are lookng to add some kind of ground species i would go with a skink or too. like a 5 lined or a fire. otherwise you should definately have enough entertainment just from the anoles.

someone suggested box turtles? lol boxies eat meat so an anole would end up as a treat for one of these guys if caught.

Yea thats what i was going to do.

Thanks for all the flora info... I know nothing about Botany...

So far so good might concider a small rim at the front of the enclosure to keep water and substrait in the trank and not all over the floor

I sort of have that... it rises about an inch up... But it is hard to see from the pictures.

1 inch rise.

If I were you I would just go to the hardware store and buy a 6' piece of trim and stain it to match the rest of the tank and use that as the trim. It will be a mess if you don't
